The World's First

Posted by Frois-Naidu on 9:08 PM

The Night Safari is the world's first nocturnal zoo and is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Singapore. It was a great opportunity for me to test out the ISO noise levels on my d90.Had about 20 or so shots..with the d90 coupled with a 50mm f/1.8.Most of the animals were either to far and most were hidden in the shadows of the trees.Had to be patient in some cases to wait for them to lurk by the 'moonlight'.Opted for the walk rather than tram this time around as neither way it ll be impossible to view all exhibits(moreover the tram would be a huge image on the slow shutter.)

More or less i rather enjoyed my second visit to the night safari...with its taste of exquisite wildlife life like the Serval,Giant Anteater,Golden Cat,Fishing Cat,Golden Jackal and Indian Wolf. The highlight of the Night Safari would be it's star attraction...a bull elephant sporting its majestic tusks...Chawang.

Reservoir in the City

Posted by Frois-Naidu on 7:26 PM

Chose a rather unusual day to visit the Marina Barrage...it was raining,a heavy down pur too intially. However all the outlook was more or less kind off meant for most of the shots.Built across the Marina Channel between the reclaimed lands of Marina East and Marina South the Marina Barrage was officially opened on 1 November 2008.
With these works...the Marina Bay and Kallang Basin now form the new downtown Marina Reservoir(which is in fact a fresh water catchment area...amazing!).From my understanding, the barrage acts as a dam in ensuring flood control by changing the tide flow in and out of the Marina channel.
Had previously bought a street directly to just browse the whereabouts of the various sites i might want to visit sometime soon.Found it rather interesting as there is in in fact a lot of tunneling and construction work going on in the vicinity.
And well for the fact that a future mrt station will be running true this very portion raises alot of questions...lets face it...practically a whole chunk of Marina was crafted out of reclaimed land.

In Honour of Our Glorious Dead

The Kranji War Cemetery is located in Kranji and is the final resting place for Allied soldiers who perished during the Battle of Singapore and also during Japanese Occupation from 1942-1945 and in other parts of Southeast Asia during World War II.
There are 4,461 World War II casualties buried or commemorated at this cemetery, of which more than 850 of these are unidentified. There are 64 World War I headstones, of which three commemorate casualties known to have been buried elsewhere but whose graves could not be found on concentration.

Thaipusam 09'

Posted by Frois-Naidu on 8:12 PM

Thaipusam is celebrated on the full moon in the Tamil month of Thai (Jan/Feb). The festival commemorates both the birthday of Murugan, the youngest son of Shiva and Parvati, and the occasion when Parvati gave Murugan a spear so he could vanquish the evil demon Soorapadman.
I don't recall have been to a Thaipusam on weekend before and even yet,on a Sunday.
The feeling of being in the temple during the start of the ceremony is exhilarating. Many tourist,photographers,on-lookers,devotees and supporters can be seen surrounding the kavadi carrier...some done and preparing the one undertaking the carrier and many others just wanting to see this marvelous spectacle of faith.I had the opportunity the accompany a closed family friend this year with his walk from Serangoon right up til tank road. The road was extremely hot under the baking sun...did manage to walk some way barefoot though as a sign of good faith...well the heat got to me and had to put my slippers back on.Much later during the 4km walk the weather calmed a little and things were much better..the Serangoon stretch was no doubt the longest straight road during the journey. Its the first the time that i have accompanied anyone during kavadi carrying.

This year in Singapore there was a larger number than usual people taking part in this ceremony...9000 in all!Compared to the usual of about 4/5000.Hmmm more foreigners or has the economic downturn led people to take up more vows of faith?
