Long-Tailed Macaque(Crab-eating Macaque)

Posted by Frois-Naidu on 1:09 PM

After about close 2 hours of hike(at Bukit tImah nature reserve) came upon a group of long-tailed macaques
  • these perhaps are the common species seen in an around the catchment areas
  • their a little more friendly i should say...and perhaps often remained unhinged with human presence
  • well as always its not good to feed the monkeys, due to this the just remain where there are and never attack any passerby for food
  • the forest has more than enough food for them

More about the long-tailed macaques

  • Sir Stamford Raffles who gave the animal its scientific name in 1821, did not specify what he meant by the use of this word although it is presumed it had something to do with his observation of the animal's colour
  • They are the third largest range of any primate species
  • They can found in a wide variety of habitats, including primary lowland rainforest disturbed and secondary rainforests, and riverine and coastal forests of nipa palm and mangroves
  • Normally they are in groups with 5 or more(yet to see more than 6 or so in a single group)

Hope to see the banded-leaf monkeys soon...there are about 20 leaft in the central catchment area
